JITLADA Restaurant
Until his passing at age 57 in 2018, Jonathon Gold was LA's Pulitzer Prize winning restaurant critic. Imagine that! A Pulitzer Prize for writing about restaurants! He was an inspiration to me because he DEEPLY VALUED the ethnic restaurants of LA. In my opinion, they make LA so unique in the food world. Most cities have fine dining. But the KEY INGREDIENT to creating and sustaining an AUTHENTIC ethnic restaurant is a large population of natives. We have the most diversity in the world. And these folks crave a taste of home. You can actually step into another country by just visiting a little ethnic restaurant in an otherwise unremarkable strip mall.
Gold LOVED Jitlada Thai in Hollywood / Thai Town. His review uncovers a secret off-menu Thai style hamburger called the Jazz Burger, which the owner invented for her kids. My brave daughter Tessa and I recently stole away from school lunch to see if we could convince the cooks to let her try it. And for me, ordering the craziest thing on a menu is my jam...so the Fish Kidney Stew, which Gold recommended, sounded perfect. It was so spicy I used up a ton of napkins on my forehead! Sloomoo Institute Los Angeles

Have you been to Sloomoo yet? Sloomoo, aka the Slime Museum, is much to my surprise, a lot of fun for the whole family.
Sloomoo is an immersive slime experience where you can touch, smell, play, and even make your own slime. I know slime is often a parents nightmare because it can be such a mess, but this place really highlights how fun slime can be. The kids had a blast, and I was shocked at how into it us grown-ups were too! The giant vats of various types of slime were mesmerizing, and you can even launch some in a giant slingshot.
Located right across the street from the Grove on Fairfax, it makes a great family date, followed by some ice cream or a snack at the Farmer's Market. Tickets are on the pricey side at $36-40 per person, depending on the time of day you go, so take your time going through it to get your moneys worth. Get your slime on at Sloomoo!

GHOSTS
Finding a show that is good for the whole family feels increasingly difficult, but we recently discovered a comedy called GHOSTS that has been a hit with everyone.
The story is based around Samantha and Jay, a young couple from the city who throw caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge run-down country estate they inherited into a B&B, only to discover it is inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents. Jay cannot see or hear the ghosts, but after a near-death experience, Sam can. Hilarity ensues as the motley crew of spirits learn how to co-exist, and even thrive along side their new landlords. The show is really charming, funny, and very warm. The episodes are short and easily digestible, which is great for busy kids and busy schedules. PARENT DISCLAIMER: There is a light smattering of things not entirely appropriate for kids, but they mostly fly right over their heads. In our house, it is adult, teen, and tween approved! :)
GHOSTS originally premiered in 2021, has 5 seasons, and is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
