SUSURU RAMEN

I recently took Tessa on a lunch adventure to Susuru Ramen in Hollywood—a place where ramen bowls are everywhere, but the real star is their elusive, drool-worthy katsu sando. Think crispy fried pork snuggled between fluffy, crustless white bread, like a fancy Japanese lunchbox sandwich—but better. Sure, you can find ramen on every corner in LA, but katsu sando? That’s like finding a unicorn in Little Tokyo. And the Flying Saucer Dumplings are like Robin to it's Batman. Props to Susuru Ramen for serving them up like they're the hottest new food groups. We’re talking Instagram-worthy layers of panko-breaded pork and tonkatsu sauce that make your soul do a little happy dance. And don't forget to order the gyoza appetizer for an "out-of-this-world" flying saucer experience! If you’re not eating this stuff, are you even living?

When you live in LA, it is sometimes easy to forget that it is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. We recently had a good friend visit from Japan, who very much wanted to see the Hollywood sign up close. It turns out that the last time we did that was 25 years ago! And apparently, the sneaky ways we had back then to get close have since been restricted, so we set out to find the current best spot to get a good view. After much research we ended up in Lake Hollywood Park, and had a perfectly lovely afternoon.
Lake Hollywood Park is one of those rare Los Angeles gems that feels both local and iconic. Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, it offers one of the best, unobstructed views of the Hollywood Sign—perfect for snapping that must-have out-of-town guest photo without battling the crowds at busier spots. It has a large grassy, dog-friendly space which is great for a picnic, and it has shady trees and a laid-back vibe that make it easy to relax. There’s plenty of room for kids to play, and the peaceful setting feels worlds away from the hustle of the city below.
We spread out blankets, stuffed our faces, tossed the football and threw the frisbee, all underneath the Hollywood sign on a gorgeous day. Whether you’re there for a quick photo op or an afternoon stretched out on a blanket, Lake Hollywood Park delivers exactly what visitors hope for: a postcard-worthy backdrop and a slice of LA charm.
Lake Hollywood Park is located at 3160 Canyon Lake Drive, LA, CA 90068, and there is usually plenty of street parking in front of the park.

The Biggest Little Farm
A great documentary for the whole family

A few years ago, while on a very long plane ride, I came across the documentary "The Biggest Little Farm". I absolutely loved it...so much so, that I came home and made the entire family watch it for movie night. :) The story follows John and Molly Chester, a couple from Los Angeles who on an impulse set out to restore 200 acres of depleted farmland. 50 miles outside of LA they dreamed of creating a regenerative, biodiverse farm. John was formerly a cinematographer, and Molly a private chef, so needless to say, they were out of their depths.
John and Molly are guided by the belief that harmony with nature would yield abundance. What they discover, however, is that nature is uncompromising, and harmony doesn’t mean eradicating the parts they find inconvenient. Each “pest” reveals itself as an essential piece of the puzzle. By showing the often frustrating, sometimes heartbreaking trial-and-error process, it underscores a truth that modern agriculture often ignores—every element, predator and prey alike, contributes to the balance. Their journey becomes not just about growing food, but about cultivating patience, humility, and respect for nature’s own design.
I found it completely charming, because it blends gorgeous nature cinematography with the messy, funny, and heartfelt reality of life on the farm. John and Molly's optimism, paired with their willingness to share failures as openly as successes, makes their story feel deeply human. It takes us through their hard earned wisdom that farming isn’t about controlling nature, but partnering with it. It left me inspired, smiling, and just a little in awe of how nature works when we let it.
