Food & Fun in GARDENA -

GARDENA TOUR

Having lived in Japan for 5 years after college, I am especially intrigued by the Japanese communities here in Los Angeles, and Gardena is a great one to explore. Gardena is widely recognized as a historic Japanese American enclave in Southern California. Japanese AND historic? Those two things are like catnip to me! :)

After World War II, many Japanese Americans—returning from incarceration camps or relocating from Little Tokyo—settled in Gardena because of affordable housing, nearby jobs, and fewer housing restrictions. During the 1950s–1970s, they built a strong community through farms, small businesses, churches, and civic leadership. In later decades, Japanese companies and expatriates further reinforced Gardena’s Japanese presence.

Although the city has since become more diverse, the Japanese American community remains central to Gardena’s historical identity and its role as a major Japanese American suburban enclave.

Gardena is teeming with incredible cuisine! Unlike more tourist-oriented areas, Gardena’s Japanese food scene developed as community-serving and quality-driven, which helped it gain a reputation among locals, Japanese nationals, and chefs as a go-to destination. Even as Los Angeles’ Japanese dining scene expanded citywide, Gardena remains a core hub where Japanese cuisine is rooted in community.

Our family dines in Gardena often, and the kids are obsessed with Kura Sushi. Think Tokyo technology combined with yummy eats and prizes...what more could a kid want? :). There are several locations now throughout the Los Angeles Area, but the Gardena outpost remains our favorite.

Family Fun at Kura Sushi Gardena: A Sushi Theme Park Adventure With My Kids

THROWBACK VIDEO!  Visiting Kura Sushi in Gardena at the tail end of Covid with my kids felt like stepping into a full-blown sushi theme park. From the moment we sat down, the conveyor belts started whizzing by—fast-track plates rushing straight to us and a slow belt showcasing endless options. My wife Jenna cackled out loud at all the goofy fun, and the kids were thrilled as they ordered sushi from a digital screen, played games between bites, and dropped their empty plates into the special counter slot to work toward a prize. It turned the experience of eating raw fish and exotic dishes into pure excitement. Kura Sushi is truly a bells-and-whistles wonderland for families.

GARDENA CINEMA

Step inside Gardena Cinema, the last single-screen movie theater in Los Angeles and a beautifully preserved retro gem. From its classic marquee and nostalgic concessions counter to the vintage seats and old-school charm, the entire experience feels like stepping back in time.

The cinema was built in 1946, and was originally known as the Park Theatre. It has been a single-screen theater since its construction, and still features original elements such as 800 seats and balcony "crying rooms". (SIDE NOTE: Crying rooms were small, soundproof booths, designed for parents with noisy babies to watch the movie without disturbing others. They featured a large glass window and a speaker system so parents could see and hear the film while soothing their child, sometimes even offering amenities like bottle warmers, and were popular from the 1940s to 1960s).

Single-screen theaters were once common neighborhood hubs, but most have been decimated by the rise of multiplexes and streaming services. The Gardena Cinema's survival makes it a unique cultural landmark, especially as the last family-owned single-screen in the greater Los Angeles area.

Watching a film here is like reliving childhood memories—just like seeing Star Wars in the late ’70s. Check out their lineup of unique screenings and special events at their official site: www.gardenacinema.com.
